Malcom X Assassinated
Malcom X was a young African American who at one time had been the leader of the Nation of Islam. He then left the organization to go after other more peaceful ways of fighting for civil rights. Sadly, during a meeting in New York Malcom X was assassinated by three members of the Nation of Islam in 1965.
Bloody Sunday
Martin Luther King and the SCLC had been leading demonstrations outside of a Dallas County Courthouse. A member of the protest was shot and a march was then scheduled from Selma to Montgomery on March 7. When the marchers got to a certain point in their journey Alabama State troopers ordered them to go home. When they refused, teargas was shot into the crowd and people were beaten. Over fifty people were sent to the hospital.
Medgar Evers
On June 12, 1963 Medgar Evers was returning home from an NAACP meeting carrying protest shirts. He was then struck in the back of the head by a bullet. He then died at a local hospital an hour later. His murder was only hours after JFK'S Civil Rights speech.
Emmit Till
Emmit Till was a 14 year old boy who was visiting his family in Money, Mississippi. He allegedly flirted with a white cashier at a store. A few days later, two men kidnapped him, beat him and shot him. The two men were eventually acquitted of the charges in front of an all white jury.
The Murders of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner
These three men were civil rights coworkers in Mississippi. Schwerner and Goodman were beaten and shot once while Chaney was beaten and shot three times. These acts of violence were committed by the local chapter of the KKK along with the Neshoba County Sheriffs Office.
