Loving vs. Virginia
A white man and an African American women were married in the District of Columbia. After they were married they returned to their home in Virginia where they were later arrested. They were charged with breaking the state statute which stated it was illegal for interracial couples to get married. They were covicted and sentenced to a year long prison term.
Brown vs. Board of Edu
On May 17, 1954 the Supreme Court ruled by a unanimous decision that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. They said that this violated the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.
Plessy vs. Ferguson
A man who was African American but very light colored sat in the white section of a Louisiana railcar. He was arrested and the court ruled that things could sbe separate as long as they were equal. However, later on in the Brown vs. Board of Edu case this decision "separate but equal" was reversed and it was determined that segregation was unconstitutional.
